Known previously as the indie rockers Rm. 101, Kieskagato is a newly pared down unit of four musicians. This self titled ep is a project described as “a product of our rethinking, rebuilding, and (in our minds) improving on previous recordings.” The five tracks on this disc have been taken from former recordings and extended and embellished in ways that will delight the ear. Easily comparable to Tortoise, Pinback, Radiohead, Air and some Miles Davis, Kieskagato has a smooth and pleasant sound that paints wide sound-scapes that dare abstraction without failing into obscure noise and broken rhythms. The opening track “Thursday” is a mellow rock melody that, just as it becomes predictable, slightly changes gears by adding a tightly controlled horn section that, although completely unexpected, sounds absolutely flawless in the composition. Bright vocals are layered over a roaming bass-line in “See You at the Meeting”, a bubble-gum tune that sacrifices complex arrangements for simple electronic noise that, again, satisfies the integrity of the song while being completely unexpected. Finally, this ability to be defiantly smooth while being simultaneously risky proves successful on the 9 minute long “Well Then, Alright”, a meandering structure that bridges boundaries between trance-harmonics and experimental rock-jazz excursions. A terrific EP announcing masterful musicians. Don’t miss this one. Java Magazine (Phoenix AZ) May 2005 vol 125 |
